This course is aimed to introduce the contemporary field of anthropology of performance to the undergraduate students. Started from discussing the concept of ‘performance,’ the students will first be exposed to approaches to analyze the cultural performances. Special theoretic attentions will be paid to the legacy of anthropology of symbol, as well as relevant issues surrounding the conceptualization of cultural performance. In the second half of the semester, the courses mainly cover three genres of cultural performance: music, dance and theatre, in order to reflect on the expansion of anthropological perspective into various performative activities. One main issues raised in the relevant enquiries of anthropology of performance is the ‘performativity’ as a universal essence across human expressive behaviors, which manifests the symbolic systems as well as dialogical and dynamic relationship between different social groups.
